Data Visualisation: Food Waste and Estimate Confidence

This physical meal tray, placemat and brochure were designed to highlight both the vast differences in food waste per capita amongst different continents and the lack of confidence in the UN’s offical estimates. It also aims to showcase two statistics commonly associated with both food waste and lack of research, along with how these have appeared to have no relation to the lack of confident estimates made around the world. Both poverty and population size are factors affecting the waste of food throughout all stages of production through lessening the function of successful food systems (Francesca Galli, 2019). By including both average income and population size, users are presented with a robust visualisation of not only the current food waste estimates but also a visualisation of the shortcomings of said estimates.
